Garand Saga Continues

Back in September of 2009 we got all excited when it looked like a wave of Grands from Korea were going to crash against our shores.

Then, almost a year later in August of 2010, we learned that the Obama Administration had killed the deal.

We then had another pause when on Veteran's Day of that same year Congress was going to take action which seemed to go absolutely nowhere.

Now we here from the Koreans via SayUncle that our government has agreed to the import.

After nearly three years, I still don't have my Korean War Garand.

Light Up Your Press

I am sure there is a quantum physics formula somewhere out there that calculates the factors of applied reloading and determines that the more time you have to reload, the older you are and the further away from the spouse you tend to gravitate too including the garage or basement or other dark corner. Rather there is such a formula or not it always adds up to you need more light.

I have seen people do everything they can to their reloading environment to get more light where they need it including duct taping flash lights to clamping on book lights to their workspace or the press itself. Some solutions work better than others but all tend to get in the way eventually or at least make caliber changes a pain.

The folks at Inline Fabrications have tackled the problem by creating LED light packages in short, adhesive mounted strips to mount directly to your press and splash precious light right where it is needed the most.

The problem is solved. I think the only improvement I could see might be a very small battery pack option so that you don't have a wire running from your press. Of course with their AC adapter you never need to worry about dead batteries but with small powerful batteries available now and the low power demands of LEDs, I am sure that it would not be much of a nuisance to have to swap a couple of CR2032s or a 123 lithium now and then.

I think I will order their modular kit in a couple of weeks. I'll post pics once it is set up. Maybe if I get around to it, I'll make my own little battery case.

Remington and the US Army are Surplussing and Raffling off 4,000 M24 Sniper Rifles

The Army has a few thousand M24 Sniper Weapon Systems that they're in the processes of reconfiguring into XM2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifles. This total conversion changes everything but the receiver, which Remington will replace for sale to us, the Americans. Bomber!

The M24 is a great sniper rifle platform, but given the vast distances the Army has found snipers taking shots from, they've concluded that they need something with longer legs. The Remington 700 receivers used in the M24s is fully capable of handling .300 Winchester Magnum, which offers about 50% more energy and has a 50% greater effective range than the 7.62 NATO cartridges they're shooting now, and it's good out to 1,200 meters. It does kick a little more.

Once you take off the barrel, the optic, the stock, the sling, the bipod, the bolt, the extractor, and all the trigger parts, you've got one pile with almost no XM2010 and another pile with a damn near complete M24, which Remington has gotten permission to reassemble and do with them what they will.

They'll be taking 2,000 of these capable (and pre-customized by the soldiers who carried them) sniper rifles andselling them on a first-come, first-serve basis, with priority given to military snipers, active and reserve duty military, retired military, and law enforcement, respectively.

Two thousand more will be raffled off, $5 gets you one ticket, $20 gets you five, and a benjamin gets you thirty tickets. All proceeds will go to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides comfort homes for wounded soldiers and their families, for free.

Wisconsin Reciprocity

Wisconsin has announced their reciprocity list for the states whose Concealed Carry licenses they will recognize. While I am glad to see that they are going to be reciprocal with 1/2 the nation from the start I am sad to see that Ohio is not one of them. Maybe they are just waiting to see who wins the Ohio State - Wisconsin game next Saturday. At least I can carry there with my Pennsylvania license.

The 25 winners are:

No Guns On Ohio State House Grounds

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board voted yesterday to prohibit concealed guns on the property surrounding the Statehouse.

Except, they have no authority to do so. But let's not let the law get in the way of arbitrarily making crap up wherever we want including the grounds surrounding the place where they make the laws in the first place.
